Dafter was founded as a lumber settlement. It was given a post office named "Stevensburgh" in January 1879, with George Stevens as the first postmaster.

The name of the post office was changed to Dafter, after the township, in July 1893. It was a station on the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroad.

TOWNSHIP OF DAFTER NOTICE OF BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING
The Dafter Township Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025 – 2026 at the Dafter Township Hall, 2926 W. 10 Mile Rd. Dafter, MI on March 25, 2025 at 6:30 P.M. The Property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of hearing. A copy of the budget is available for public inspection at the office of the Clerk, 2926 W. 10 Mile Road, Dafter MI. Phone 906-632-1579.
